Breaking the Silence: New York's Emerging Menopause Care Revolution
By Dr. Kristen Navarette, MVP Health Care’s Medical Director,
Clinical Collaboration & Performance Management
Every year, approximately 1.3 million women in the United States begin menopause. In New York alone, over half a million women are between the ages 45 and 50 and may begin navigating this transition, yet many suffer in silence. Menopause is the natural end of menstruation and typically occurs around the age of 51. However, this definition does not encompass the complex life transition that can begin as many as 8-10 years earlier with a stage known as perimenopause. For some women, medical procedures or conditions may trigger early menopause starting as early as their twenties, creating additional challenges during an already confusing phase of life.
Periomenopause and menopause symptoms are as diverse as New York’s population itself. Beyond the widely known hot flashes, women experience mood changes, weight gain, sleep disruptions, and cognitive effects that can impact everything from office presentations to family dinners. During New York’s notoriously cold winter months, temperature fluctuations from heated indoor spaces to frigid streets can exacerbate symptoms causing joint pain, increased irritability, and dry skin.
The Current Climate of Menopause Care in the Empire State
Historically, menopause care in New York has been somewhat more advanced than the national landscape. Still, the overall state of menopause health care in the state remains fragmented, under-supported, and often under-discussed. Less than 30% of OB/GYN residency programs offer menopause training, leaving many health care providers ill-equipped to address these concerns. While the state has developed some reproductive health care offerings, specialized menopause care has lagged until recently. In fact, 85% of women experience menopause symptoms, yet many do not receive appropriate care, leading to poorer quality of life.
Turning the Tide: Menopause Care for New Yorkers
To address this issue, new partnerships and programs are emerging to fill critical gaps in care and empower women with the knowledge and tools to navigate menopause with confidence. For example, MVP Health Care and Elektra Health recently partnered to offer comprehensive and affordable menopause-centered care to enhance well-being through specialized resources and expert virtual care. This represents a new approach to menopause care, combining tailored medical expertise with accessibility. While other menopause programs and services are available across the state, MVP and Elektra Health’s partnership provides evidence-based, innovative services and expertise that is hyper-focused on supporting women in an on-demand environment—ultimately empowering women with the education and community support they want and need.
Looking Towards the Future
The future of menopause care in New York looks promising, but work remains. As more health care companies recognize the importance of specialized menopause training and treatment, women will have better support during this significant life transition.
